Photograph forms part of a collection of images sent to the WMS offices by Miss Ellen Douglas depicting mission and outreach work in India. Miss Douglas served in the Bhil field of India from 1930 to 1951. She passed away in 1990. "Ellen Douglas influenced many people in her life. Her faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, and her love for Him could not be surpassed. Those who knew her were truly blessed to have had her as a friend and she will be missed very much." (From a memorial record for Miss Douglas printed in the Glad Tidings, Jan. 1991).

"One lady stood by the customs table with her several suitcases. When the port worker stopped to chat a moment, tears came to her eyes for she was on her way to visit her daughter who she hadn't seen for many years. When the port worker turned to leave, the lady voiced her appreciation saying, "When you came I was feeling blue, but you have given me a real lift"." Written by Dorothy Lukes in an article for the Presbyterian Record, Sept. 1958.

A handshake showing the armband of a Presbyterian Church in Canada immigration port worker, [1958?].

The port workers welcomed new immigrants to Canada, meeting them at the port and helping any in distress. They also located the church nearest to where the new Canadians were going and contacted the minister and the WMS so that they could visit and welcome them.

Dr. Margaret Strang Savage on horseback, Peace River District, Alberta, [1931?].

The following is from a letter by Margaret Strang to the Young People's Society of Glenarm Presbyterian Church, Ontario, Jan. 11, 1931, "I travel by horseback – the only sensible or feasible way – on these roads… My territory has an area of about 600 square miles and its going to take me a few months to cover even the half of it… My trusty steed, called "Duke".... We cover some long trails together both by dark and by daylight…There was
one night about six weeks ago… very sick baby down in the Whitemud Valley about 8 miles away. The mercury stood at 30 below – but we struck out about 10 p.m…. The baby had pneumonia, but it is rosy and laughing again."

The following was a message from Mrs. Gushue-Taylor to the W.M.S. as printed in the Glad Tidings, c. 193, "One of the old Bible women, An- so…came along to our house…and asked me to write to the W.M.S. ladies in Canada on her behalf, and send her greetings for Christmas and the coming year. What she said was "your friends over in the homeland have shown so much love to the people here and help them so much" that her heart is very moved, and she wants you to know that she is truly grateful." Margery Gushue-Taylor and her husband, the Rev. Dr. Gushue-Taylor, were missionaries to Taiwan.

Celebration at the Kenora Fellowship Centre, Kenora, Ontario, May 30th, 1971.

A celebration of traditional singing and dancing preceded the opening and dedication of the $150,000 expansion to the Kenora Fellowship Centre (now called Anamiewigummig) provided by The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Anamiewigummig, which continues to be supported by our Church, is a drop-in centre providing programs and shelter for people on the street.

This worship service celebrated the Diamond Jubilee of the Women's Missionary Association of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan. Mrs. Eileen Parish, President of the W.M.S. (WD) and Mrs. Edna Cameron, President of the W.M.S.(ED) were invited to the celebration, in recognition of the close association between our two Church's.

"Six long hours at sea on a small boat under the tropic sun on our way to Korenko on the East Coast. We had them all singing the choruses at first, but as we got out to sea , one by one they began to get sick or to sleep to prevent seasickness. I don't get sick, so I just played on!" Looking at a book. Tyndale House, Montreal, [196-?].

Tyndale House (now Tyndale –St. Georges Community Centre) was established in 1927 with financial assistance from The Presbyterian Church in Canada and the Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Montreal. Over the years Tyndale has reached countless children (and adults) through its programs and services, helping individuals and families live with greater self-reliance and fulfillment.

Rev. R. Malcolm "Mac" Ransom with son Malcolm by the moon gate in Kien Shui, 1948.

Rev. Mac Ransom and his wife Gerry served as missionaries in Yunnan Province, China until forced to leave by the Communist government in 1950. Back in Canada, Mac served a pastorate in Fort Erie before becoming Assistant Secretary for the Board of World Mission in 1958. Mission education was his special interest and he served as the director of Missionary Education from 1966 to 1978 when he retired.

The children were invited to spend a day of fun with the Presbyterian church in Grimsby. As noted on the back of the photograph "Fifty children were to go – seventy-five showed up". The picture shows the children waiting in front of Calvin Grace Church before leaving for Grimsby.

Isabel McConnell worked in Jobat, India for many years through the Women's Missionary Society, supervising the hospital work and training new nurses. In one profile (written c. 1940s), it states "In the last few years she has been working in a mobile health van on the Bhil field, working in villages where previously there has been no medical help. Often it means treating hundreds of cases every week, sleeping in a different bed every night and traveling with her Indian helpers over very bad roads, but "Mac" does it all cheerfu
lly".

Lillian Dickson (seated) and friend overlooking Sun Moon Lake, Taiwan, [1955?].

Lillian Dickson and her husband, Rev. James Dickson, served as overseas missionaries in Taiwan from 1927-1965 (excluding 1940-46). She established a non-profit agency, The Mustard Seed, to help organize and fund her charitable works in Taiwan, including the founding of homes for boys and girls, the creation of maternity wards, the distribution of medical supplies and clothing, and building churches that also served as schools.

The grounds at Armagh House, Mississauga, Ontario, [196-]

Armagh House was established in 1955 as a home for unwed mothers by The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Over the years, the home has continued to provide support to single mothers, and has expanded its outreach to include programs of support and assistance to troubled teens. "I think that the best thing that Armagh did for me was to give me a chance to sort out my feelings away from any outside pressures, while I was surrounded by people who knew what I was going through" Armagh resident, 1969.
